I'm back! After a substantial hiatus of writing (but not of trying to pay with phones), I've re-upped the website with a new CMS in the back. I honestly think that part of my problem with writing before was simply that I didn't enjoy blogging with Jekyll. Jekyll is a fantastic tool in creating fast websites, and I've used it for several of my clients and I've been very happy there. However, when it comes to this side-blogging project where I need to get in, get out, and get back to the job -- Jekyll felt too cumbersome in naming and creating posts.
Over the past few months I've repeatedly kicked around the idea of moving to Kirby (I've been wanting to use this project as a means to learn another CMS to further my web dev knowledge), but after seeing that it's a licensed product (as was Ghost, another licensed CMS), I decided to do some more research. The CMS I chose was GRAV, and so far, I absolutely love it.
Now, don't get me wrong, GRAV has many similarities to Jekyll in its file and folder structure, which could be just as cumbersome for me here. However, the one thing that Jekyll doesn't have is the ability to install and use an Admin area. I love this admin area in GRAV -- it's intuitive, full featured yet lightweight, and it's pretty. After installing (with a few complexities -- pro tip: read the docs. They tell you up front to worry about hidden files being skipped on migration to the web server, and they're right, of course) I've been able to migrate the existing few articles on the blog to GRAV in a matter of an hour. And it's been fun!
Bottom line, if I have fun in my CMS environment, I'm more likely to blog. Eventually, I'll grab a theme for the site and construct a proper home page, but those will be for another time...
